Union Sunday School concert series continues in Clermont Aug. 26
Sally and Glen Boie, Ruth Schlatter and Bonnie Loomis to perform

CLERMONT – The 38th annual Union Sunday School Concert Series continues Aug. 26 with a performance by Sally and Glen Boie, and Ruth Schlatter, all of Hawkeye, Iowa; and Bonnie Loomis of Greene, Iowa, at Union Sunday School in Clermont.

Sally Boie has been a church organist for more than 60 years and enjoys accompanying instrumental and vocal solos, playing piano and organ duets, and entertaining at nursing homes and area events. Along with her husband, Glen, she sings with the Winnebago International Travelers, the Frustrated Maestros at FMCA Motorhome Rallies, and in a church choir in Arizona.

Schlatter of rural Hawkeye has sung in choirs and at weddings, funerals, church services, and assisted living and nursing home facilities. Loomis, who lives in Greene, Iowa, has sung in gospel concerts, directed choirs, and entertained at nursing homes and civic events.

Following the concert, the Clermont Historical Society will provide refreshments at the Clermont Opera House – one block from the Union Sunday School. The concert and tea are free.

The annual Union Sunday School Concert Series features performances by trained musicians on the largest Kimball Pipe Organ in the United States. Built in 1896, the organ was a gift presented by former Iowa Gov. William Larrabee to his daughter, Anna, who was the church’s organist for more than 60 years.

Encased in a walnut cabinet, the instrument was hand-pumped until 1910, when an electric blower was installed. The organ was restored in 1979 and rededicated on Oct. 19, 1980, which marked the beginning of the annual recital series. The organ was most recently restored in 2010 by Dobson Pipe Organ Builders of Lake City, Iowa.
