CLERMONT – The people of Clermont are in for a treat.

The 39th annual Union Sunday School Concert Series kicks off July 28 in Clermont with two well-traveled and highly acclaimed musicians – Craig Hultgren and Brooke Joyce.

Hultgren, a cellist, spent 30 years performing with the Alabama Symphony before moving recently to the Decorah area where he farms and remains active in music and the creative arts. A recipient of two artist fellowships from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, Hultgren has had nearly 300 musical works created for him. At a Carnegie Hall concert in 2016, the New York Classical Review commented that he “played with impressive poise and sensitivity.”

He taught at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the Alabama School of Fine Arts, Wartburg College (Iowa) and Birmingham-Southern College. He is a founding member and former president of the Birmingham Art Music Alliance and was on the board of directors of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestras of Birmingham and its Scrollworks program. Currently, he is vice president of the Oneota Valley Community Orchestra board of directors in Decorah and has recently assumed the role of chair for the Iowa Composers Forum

Joyce is a composer whose music has been described as “vividly pictorial” by the San Francisco Chronicle and “exceptionally gripping” by the Los Angeles Times. His works have been performed by soloists and ensembles around the world, including the Indianapolis Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, St. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic, Brentano Quartet, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Nash Ensemble and the British tenor James Gilchrist.

He has received numerous awards and earned degrees in composition from Princeton University, the Cleveland Institute of Music and Lawrence University. Currently, he is the composer-in-residence at Luther College and a founding faculty member of the International Music Festival of the Adriatic. He and his family recently spent a semester in Malta, where he and his wife, Jennifer, led a study abroad program.

The Union Sunday School is part of the Montauk Historic Site, one of eight historic sites overseen by the State Historical Society of Iowa, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.
